Weekly Pick-Me-Ups

Events and activities to break routine

One of my favorite instructors I had at UL Lafayette, the now-retired Ian Kinsella, once told our philosophy class something that I never forgot. It was a Wednesday. I was barely paying attention and mid-daydream when he said, “Most people spend five-sevenths of their life waiting for the other two-sevenths. That’s a long time to be unhappy.”

It was simple. It was something noted so ubiquitously in comedies and memes that its oversaturation softened the reality that we, unfortunately, don’t seem to enjoy the weekday hours we have off free from work. We are tethered so strongly to our tasks that we feel there is no time, and there is no way to make time for the things we want to do.

We wait for Friday. We wait for vacation. We restrain ourselves and make excuses to do so, that it just wasn’t the right time. But why?

This week, there are many Wednesday and Sunday events that range from whiskey tasting to artist talks to trail training sessions. Take a look! Adding an event to look forward to can brighten your outlook and add enough spontaneity to break the routine.

Wednesday:

Marley’s Sports Bar: The downtown staple Marley’s will host its first whiskey tasting event from 6-8 p.m., featuring Heaven Hill whiskey, this Wednesday evening. Each ticket includes one free old fashioned cocktail, five different whiskey tastings and free bourbon cheeseburger sliders. The tasting menu includes 10-year-old Henry McKenna, Elijah Craig small batch, Larceny and more. Tickets are $28.45 at Eventbrite.com.

Shadows on the Teche talk: New Iberia’s Shadows on the Teche will open the exhibit “Deconstructing the Shadows-on-the-Teche” with a speech from Olivia Johnson, the Shadows’ Summer Research Intern. Johnson will discuss her research into the Shadows’ architects, Mary and David Weeks, and their influences that guided the design of the 1834 former sugar plantation. The talk begins at 6 and ends at 8 p.m.

College of the Arts Welcome Back Social: The Paul and Lulu Hilliard Art Museum will host a one-hour party at 5 p.m. this Wednesday to welcome UL Lafayette students back to campus. The UL Lafayette College of the Arts students put on the event, and there will be free pizza.

Artist Talk: Following the Welcome Back Social at the Hilliard, Lafayette-based comic book artist and illustrator Rob Guillory will give an artist talk on his upcoming comic book and graphic novel projects. Guillory’ work has earned Eisner and Harvey Awards, and he is perhaps best known for his work on Image Comics’ “CHEW.”

Sunday:

AcadianX Group Training: This Sunday from 4-6 p.m., The Acadiana Nature Station will host a group training session, open to everyone, from Acadianx Outdoor Adventure Group. Activities include trail runs along the scenic grounds of the Nature Station and group exercises that prepare the body for endurance hikes and mountaineering. This group meets every Sunday, and members are encouraged to bring a towel, water, and running shoes.
