Wediquette Wednesday: Is a post-wedding reception after-party mandatory?
Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: We just secured our locations for the wedding and the reception. My sister is now telling me that we have to plan the after-party, especially because we have a lot of family and friends coming in from out of town. We’ve been to a few after-parties here and there, but didn’t know it was required these days. Is a post-wedding reception after-party mandatory?
Answer: While after-parties are very popular, especially in New Orleans, having one is certainly not mandatory. If you just don’t want to do an after-party or the budget doesn’t permit, you could offer suggestions of fun, nearby places to go (such as your favorite local bar), or maybe even provide transportation to a central location. A lot of guests will enjoy being let loose out on the town and some might be glad to go home after boogying down on the dance floor.
