Let Them Eat Cake

The official blog of New Orleans Bride Magazine, offering a daily dose of all things weddings

Wediquette Wednesday: What is the obligation of the bride’s parents concerning expenses for the bridesmaids?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: Our daughter’s wedding is being held here in New Orleans. We are taking the traditional route with the expenses and paying for everything except the rehearsal dinner and flowers. Her fiancé’s parents are covering those last two elements. The wedding is on the smaller side, so she will have only three bridesmaids (including the maid of honor). Two of the bridesmaids are coming in from out of state. What is the obligation of the bride’s parents concerning expenses for the bridesmaids? We want to do everything by the book!

Answer: What a generous gift for your daughter and her fiancé. I’m sure they feel immense relief in not having to worry about any of the wedding expenses. Traditionally, the bridesmaid’s lodging, but not travel, would be covered. This can be in the form of hotel rooms or, if you have guest space, offering to host them in your home. The bridesmaids would be responsible for their other expenses, including attire, travel and anything spent on food and entertainment while they are in town. If you want to cover any of those other expenses, that’s of course up to you!
