Wediquette Wednesday: Is it OK to show up to a wedding a fashionably late?
Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: Most events start late, especially in New Orleans. My cousin’s wedding ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday and there is a career seminar on the same day that will end in time for me to go, but I’ll probably be about 15 minutes late. Is it OK to show up to a wedding a fashionably late?
Answer: The short answer is no. It’s a good idea to always give yourself about 10 or 15 minutes of “buffer” time for any meeting, interview or event. Especially an event that is costing the hosts money. It’s also possible that more than one event is taking place in the same location on the same day. There will likely be other career seminars, but (fingers crossed), your cousin will only get married once. Either way, be there a little early and enjoy the festivities.
