Wediquette Wednesday: Can I uninvite a wedding guest?
Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)
Question: My fiancé and I sent out our invitations a few weeks ago, but since then, we realized one of our backup invitations ended up in the send pile. The backups are people we aren’t that close to, but that we wanted to make room for if some of our close friends or family couldn’t make it. The person already R.S.V.P.d “yes.” Also, we ended up getting way more “yes" responses than we thought, so technically we wouldn’t have sent out any of the backups in the first place. Obviously we’d have to explain (embarrassingly) what happened, but I think the person would understand it. I know I would. Can I uninvite a wedding guest?
Answer: The short answer is no. Unfortunately, there are no take backs when it comes to wedding invitations. While it might throw your budget off a little bit, it’s important to make good on all of the R.S.V.P.s. One more person (assuming a plus one wasn’t given) shouldn’t break your budget too much and in the long run, that extra place setting will be worth all of the good will and celebration cultivated with your “backup.”
