Wediquette Wednesday: Should the matron of honor and maid of honor wear the same dress?

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: I’m just now beginning the search for bridesmaid dresses. It would obviously be easiest to pick one style of dress, plus a color and call it a day. At the same time, my sister is the matron of honor and my cousin is the maid of honor. I’d love for them to have something a little different in terms of style, but probably the same color. As you can tell, I'm not sure about the rules when you have both a matron and a maid. Should the matron of honor and maid of honor wear the same dress?

Answer: Lucky for you, this is one of those situations in which there is no hard and fast rule. If you want everyone to wear a different dress, the same dress or for the matron and maid of honor to have something unique to them, it’s all up to you! If you decide to have the matron and maid of honor wear the same dress however, you may want to consider a different hairstyle, different accessories and, or different bouquets, to distinguish them from the other bridesmaids. Again, it’s your decision.
