Wediquette Wednesday: Is black an acceptable color theme for a summer wedding?

Thursday Edition

Each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette. At times, it’s a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.)

Question: My wedding is next July and we recently started digging into the planning process. It’s an evening, indoor wedding and the reception is also indoors. My heart is set on elegant black dresses for my bridesmaids and silver and gold with hints of black for the decorative elements. With it being an evening wedding, I figured black would be OK, but my mom is giving me a lot of grief over it, because it’s a summer soirée. Is black an acceptable color theme for a summer wedding?

Answer: It’s true that summer weddings traditionally employ the more colorful and vibrant hues. But, black is classic and for an evening wedding you can’t go wrong, especially if your choices are elegant over gothic — unless that’s what you are into — to each her own. Black will look especially sophisticated paired with shimmery metallic, which are of course still oh so on trend, but that’s probably because they are also timeless. Begin showing your mom some inspiration boards with dress and décor choices, so she can see your vision and, fingers crossed, come around to the more monochromatic color theme of your dreams.
