Wediquette Week: Who am I allowed to bring as a plus one?
Typically, each Wednesday, we tackle wedding etiquette questions. This week, however, is dedicated to all things wedding etiquette. Monday through Wednesday, New Orleans Bride and "Let Them Eat Cake" editor and etiquette writer Melanie Warner Spencer appeared at the 7:30 a.m. half hour each day to demystify, discuss the guidelines of and offer up tips on for the art of writing thank you notes, R.S.V.P.-ing and cell phone and email etiquette. The rest of the week is dedicated to answering some of our most popular etiquette questions.
At times, Wediquette Wednesdays are a reader question or one from a colleague, friend or family member and other times we’ll cover a popular issue. (Note: Questions may be edited for clarity and brevity.) This installment is from New Orleans Bride Magazine’s etiquette columnist, Dee Lane.
Question: I was recently invited to an ex-boyfriend’s wedding and the invitation was addressed to me plus a guest. I don’t have a boyfriend right now, and don’t want to try to find a date just for this. Who can I bring?
Answer: When you’re offered a plus-one, you’re free to bring whomever you want: a friend, a date or a relative. Just make certain that you give the person you choose to bring with you some background information and consideration.
Explain a little about the people getting married and who they are to you, as well as any traditions or rituals that may be observed at the wedding or anything that you think might happen that would embarrass your guest if they didn’t know about it ahead of time.
Since you’re going to be bringing this person with you to make you feel more comfortable, make certain that you do everything you can to make your guest as at ease as possible.
