Through the Hazy Days of Summer
5 Events to Anticipate
As the haze of June events fades and the full heat of summer is upon us, there are few things (outside of the house and in my humble opinion) to look forward to: juicy Creole tomatoes, sticky dripping snow balls, the first breath inside a well air-conditioned room and a smattering of fun-draisers (I blame my puns on the heat).
Here is a selection of five upcoming events that I’m looking forward to:
July 17: New Orleans Magazine’s Top Female Achievers 2012
I’m a little biased on this one, since I was part of the team that chose these impressive ladies, but each year this feature and the lunch that honors the women in said feature (beginning with an 11:30 a.m. champagne reception, and who doesn’t love that?) reminds me that a community is built through the efforts of individuals – and we’re lucky to have these women working for ours. For information and to purchase tickets, contact Kristi Ferrante at (504) 830-7264 or email@example.com.
Aug. 2-5: The Historic New Orleans Collection’s 2012 Antiques Forum: Circa 1812
This is one of the largest events open to the general public hosted by THNOC (in my opinion, one of the most underrated resources in our city). On Aug. 2 THNOC is offering optional tours, offering daily sessions the 3rd through the 5th commemorating the bicentennials of Louisiana statehood and the War of 1812, and celebrating 19th-century style “in the city that served as an international design center for the decorative arts and as a magnet for their importation.”
Aug. 11: The Young Leadership Council’s 26th annual Role Model Awards Gala
Honoring 25 “outstanding individuals” whom the YLC has chosen because of their leadership in our community. Chaired by executive director Amy Boyle Collins and gala chair Askala Harris, this event (patron party from 6-7 p.m. with a dinner and awards ceremony to follow) always looks like a blast and, after hearing what each of these 25 leaders have already done, will spur you to make a difference.
Aug. 25: The Louisiana Children’s Museum’s CHAIRish the Children
Featured on the cover of July’s St. Charles Avenue magazine, this is the fundraiser that proves that no matter how old you get, being a child is a blast for everyone. Their auctions feature one-of-a-kind, hand-painted chairs as well as jewelry, artwork, travel packages and more and, even if you don’t get caught up in the bidding excitement, the food by gourmet restaurants, premium cocktails and musical entertainment – as well as being about to play in the museum without children looking at you as though you’re crazy – is entertainment enough.
Sept. 19: New Orleans Magazine’s People to Watch 2012
Again, I’m biased on this one. Every year this event is more fun (last year we had both the 610 Stompers and “Jesus” – yup, you read that correctly). Held in the Black & Gold Room at the New Orleans Fair Grounds and featuring tasty cuisine and free-flowing libations, as well as the friends and family of more than 30 up-and-coming individuals (as well as a few whom you might know, though not necessarily in their new positions), some of my most favorite moments are watching the crowd’s faces as they hear why each honoree is being honored and their acceptances. The deadline for submissions to be chosen as a 2012 Person to Watch is July 1, so click here and submit whom you think is a perfect fit.
