A Guide to This Weekend's Arts Scene

Cyndi Lauper

Thursday, June 27

After a few years as a relatively obscure comic, Rob Delaney created a Twitter account that launched him to Internet fame, led to comedy jobs and, at press time, has given him more than 800,000 followers. His tweets run the gamut from surreal, explicit, anatomically specific musings on sex, food and body image to sincere thoughts on politics and his life as a recovering alcoholic. Offline, Delaney is a comedy writer and stand-up comedian, and his latest stand-up special is "Live At The Bowery Ballroom." See him IRL (that’s Twitter parlance for “in real life”) at The New Movement tonight at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Info here.

Also, in this big weekend of stand-up: frequent Best Week Ever talking head, star of the 2007 film Super High Me and "Last Comic Standing" contestant Doug Benson is at the Howlin’ Wolf tonight. Info here.

Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is among the most recognizable presences in the music world: he plays drums for The Roots, the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group that’s the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," he’s a producer and he just published Mo' Meta Blues, a memoir told through Thompson’s musical memories. He presents a DJ set at Tipitina’s tonight. DJ Soul Sister opens. Info here.

More stand-up! Dave Attell, most known for the Comedy Central series "Insomniac," stand-up specials and as a veteran of the "SNL" writer’s room (where he was also a sometimes performer), performs tonight at One Eyed Jacks. Info here.

The Prytania hosts a late night, BYOB showing of Wet Hot American Summer, David Wain and Michael Showalter’s oddball cult comedy starring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Showalter and other members of the sketch comedy group The State, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler and others. St. Claude Main Street and Bike Easy host the event to raise money for more bike racks on the street, and $10 pays for access to Siberia, the Allways Lounge, the Hi-Ho Lounge and Kajun’s Pub, who will all host live music by Bantam Foxes, Alex McMurray, The Stacks and others. Info here

Even more stand-up! Austin comic JT Habersaat, who takes a D.I.Y., punk-rock approach to comedy with his Altercation Comedy Tour, is at The New Movement tonight. Info here.
