• Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine’s J. Christian Winters has won the 2009 Teaching Award from the American Urological Association. Winters, also the director of the LSUHSC/Ochsner Urology Residency Program, was nominated by his chief residents Scott Delacroix and Eric Laborde, and former department chair Harold Fuselier.

“Dr. Winters was recognized for the reorganization efforts of the LSUHSC/Ochsner Urology Residency Program and the growth of the LSUHSC Department of Urology since Katrina,” states an LSUHSC press release.

  • The St. Charles Surgical Hospital recently opened its doors as “the first and only hospital in the world dedicated to breast reconstruction for women facing breast cancer.”

The hospital will feature 17 beds and offer a full spectrum of breast reconstruction services for women who’ve suffered from breast cancer. Innovative procedures include a nipple sparing procedure, Bilateral Simultaneous Gap Reconstruction and the “Stacked Flap” Reconstruction, pioneered by doctors Frank DellaCroce and Scott Sullivan. The facility is located on St. Charles Avenue next to the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery.

  • Ochsner has announced the completion of two rebuilding projects.

 Ochsner Health Center – Lakeview (101 W. Robert E. Lee Blvd., 846-9646) has re-opened, welcoming Ochsner Metairie Family Practice physicians Tara Berner, Sarah Holt, Sherise Olivier and Leandro Area back to Ochsner Lakeview to provide primary care, laboratory and radiology services.
Also, the Lakeview Playground, underwater for three weeks following Hurricane Katrina, has reopened with help from Ochsner.
“Ochsner is committed to supporting local efforts that will help improve the quality of life for local residents and build a healthier community,” Robert Wolterman, CEO of Ochsner Baptist, said in a press release.
Roughly 1,200 children utilize Lakeview Playground’s baseball program, and more than 400 children use the park for other team sports.

  • Fairway Medical Surgical Hospital recently received the Platinum Level 2008 Louisiana Hospital Quality Award from the Louisiana Health Care Review, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Louisiana. 

Of 93 Louisiana hospitals honored, “Fairway Medical Surgical Hospital falls among the top 30 to achieve platinum level success,” states a press release.

  • St. Tammany Parish Hospital’s Eric Davis, Michelle Milner, Donna Spano and Terri Stanga have earned designation as Certified Sterile Processing & Distribution Technicians from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. “STPH is the only Northshore hospital providing all nationally certified sterile processing staff,” states a press release.
