Wake Up, Work Out
It is no secret that New Orleans is a nocturnal city and, more often than not, if you see a sunrise here, you’re at the wrong end of a long night. (But at least you’re still seeing straight.) Even though our nightlife is the stuff of legends, the Big Easy’s diurnal residents can still get theirs.
I usually work out my morning edginess in Audubon Park or on the levee path, but one morning I headed downtown to run along the Riverwalk. Stretching from Woldenberg Park to the CBD, the broad footpath runs just a couple of scenic miles along the downtown levee, with a full eastern exposure (in case sunrises are your thing). And if you start in the right place, you can end your run (or walk, or rollerblading outing) at the French Market and refuel with Cafe du Monde’s killer beignets.
Since we can’t all live downtown, there are also plenty of 24-hour and early-morning java joints around the city. Since my usual morning routine is the Uptown levee path, I usually get my caffeine fix at the Uptown Rue de la Course or Zots. If you’re feeling friskier and want some cash-only latte art to liven up your day, head around the corner to Zots. Also, on the other side of the University neighborhood, 1st Cup Cafe is a nice place to gas up the tank if you can get in ahead of the college kids (who don’t generally show up until midday).
If you work out up north in City Park or along the Lake, NOLA Beans on Harrison and Fair Grinds on Ponce de Leon are in easy striking distance and serve up decidedly non-lethal incarnations of the original energy drink.
