“It is important to be involved in the community in order to better serve and help those who are in need all around you,” says Teresa Ann LaCour, a senior at Archbishop Chapelle High School.

LaCour was a member of the 2016 Archdiocese of New Orleans World Youth Day, where she was tasked with running the event from start to finish. As a member of the Teen Cross, she created and implemented ideas to promote a fun, relaxed environment for the local Catholic Youth to grow their faith. She was the Master of Ceremonies for the Junior High Track, and helped lead the crowd through the day’s schedule and introduce the keynote speakers.

LaCour’s most memorable volunteer experience was a Mission Trip to San Antonio with St. Clement of Rome, her church parish youth group. The group volunteered at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, a local parish in need. “It was on this trip that I first discovered that those I served actually had a greater impact on my life than I could ever have on their lives,” she says.

“While we did many different types of service, I think this entire trip made me realize how fortunate I am and how it’s my duty to help those around me,” says LaCour.

Claire Gallagher, LaCour’s youth minister at St. Clement, was the main adult who led the students on the mission trip. Gallagher’s deep love for those around her provided LaCour with an example of what a true servant leader looks like.

LaCour serves the community by signing at St. Clement of Rome Mass, teaching first grade in the Parish School of Religion and serving with Campus Ministry. “By serving with Campus Ministry, I join with other teens to create change in our community through our service projects and to enhance the faith life of our school,” she says.

LaCour doesn’t know which university she wants to attend, but she’s considering majoring in Theology. Her goal is to pass on her Catholic faith to the next generation and plans to do that through teaching or working for the Church through Youth Ministry. She plans to continue her involvement with and service to faith based organizations in college.
