Leonardo Seoane

Christian Brothers School

Cheryl Gerber

Leonardo “Leo” Seoane is a seventh-grader at Christian Brothers School who’s involved in academic games, baseball and several intramural sports. He also enjoys volunteering for the Second Harvest Food Bank and assisting relatives in Cuba.

His most rewarding volunteer experience was through Second Harvest. “I was able to see the process of providing food for the needy from start to finish,” he says. “We campaigned to get campers to bring in non-perishable food items, then we loaded the food onto conveyor belts to be stocked onto shelves.”

Living in New Orleans gives a unique opportunity to volunteers because we know first-hand how a natural disaster can take away all material things. Through volunteer work, Seoane has become more appreciative of what he has and has realized that he has a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.

“It is a good idea to help people when you can because maybe someone will help you when you need it,” he says. “It is a good idea to treat people like you want to be treated. By setting a good example, sometimes you can make others get more involved.”

Seoane also takes pride in sending products to needy relatives in Cuba – some of which he has never met. He also has family members who came from Cuba and worked hard to make a better life in the United States, and he feels a responsibility to take advantage of the opportunities available to him here.

Seoane also plays Tchoukball – a sport that originated in Europe that’s very similar to soccer and is played indoors – and recently won Christian Brothers’ Geography Bee. He is interested in the sciences and is considering a career in medicine or forensics. In the future, he intends to spread his abilities to help those in Cuba by bringing a group to volunteer for the needy.
