10 Things To Do in New Orleans This Weekend

Thursday, Nov. 21

Celebrating weird and wonderful theater, dance, comedy and nearly everything else, New Orleans Fringe is currently in progress and features 77 groups performing at venues mostly in the St. Claude/Marigny area. A “Free-For-All” area features free activities and shows. Info here.

The classic movie series at The Theatres at Canal Place wraps up with screenings of The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese’s documentation of The Band’s star-studded farewell concert, tonight and Sunday. Info here.

Friday, Nov. 22

An uproarious cast including Varla Jean Merman, Ricky Graham, Brooklyn Shaffer (aka Brian Peterson), Brian Johnston and Sean Patterson reimagines the characters of Designing Women as locals in Re-Designing Women at Mid-City Theatre. Info here.

Carlos Miguel Prieto conducts the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in the Britten Centennial Celebration at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. Info here.

Bill Cosby, The Commodores (“Brick House”) and En Vogue (“My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)”) perform at Xavier University’s annual Dr. Norman C. Francis Scholarship Benefit Concert. Info here.

Part of a series of comedic plays taking place in the fictional small town of Tuna, Texas, A Tuna Christmas follows the town’s Christmas festivities, which include a competitive lawn display contest and an ill-fated production of A Christmas Carol. Saturday, Nov. 23

Cajun rockers Lost Bayou Ramblers (known for their contribution to the Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack and collaborations with Scarlett Johansson, Dr. John and Gordon Gano of Violent Femmes), perform with My Graveyard Jaw at Siberia. Info here.

 

Sunday, Nov. 24

The perennially crowded but delicious Oak Street Po-Boy Festival is today. This year’s fest includes more than 30 vendors and a new food truck area. Info here.
