10 Things To Do This Weekend: Sept. 12-15, 2013

Thursday, Sept. 12

Hanson’s done a lot since their breakout hit “MMMBop,” both touring and releasing albums consistently and even venturing into the craft beer market with a punny brew. The band of brothers hits House of Blues tonight with Paul McDonald. Info here.

With Canal Street theaters re-opening and filling their calendars, the Joy Theater has taken note and beefed up its own slate of programming with a theater series. Beatlemania Now! (not to be confused with Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles, which the Saenger is staging in January) opens tonight . Info here.

In other theater events, the splashy tap-dance musical 42nd Street opens at Rivertown Theaters. You’ll recognize songs like “We’re in the Money,” “Shuffle Off the Buffalo” and “42nd Street.” Info here.

At the Contemporary Arts Center, Southern Rep presents 33 Variations, a play inspired by Beethoven’s eponymous work. Info here.

“Gordon Parks: The Making of an Argument,” an exhibition exploring the process behind Parks’ 1948 photo essay "Harlem Gang Leader" for Life magazine, opens tonight at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The show runs through Jan. 19. Info here.

Friday, Sept. 13

It’s Friday the 13th and a faint fall chill is in the air (for New Orleans standards, at least). What better thing to do than to visit the House of Shock, the Halloween tradition that re-opens today.  The haunted house is known for its volunteers dressed in horror movie-caliber makeup and costumes, and an outdoor festival includes circus-style entertainment and pyrotechnics. Info here.

Staged readings of Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963 commemorate the 50th anniversary of a racially motivated bombing at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. A discussion follows the readings. Info here.

Saturday, Sept. 14

Get your tweeting fingers ready: the annual Rising Tide new media conference is today, featuring panels on charter schools, communities for writers of color and New Orleans’ recovery, and a “tech school” with presentations about personal branding, online promotion and more. Info here.

The Mystic Krewe of Inane, a subkrewe of the raunchy Krewe du Vieux, throws a carny-style fundraiser that includes activities with names not fit to type here. Info here.

Sunday, Sept. 15

The Canadian twin sister duo Tegan and Sara, a guilty pleasure you don’t have to feel guilty about, plays the House of Blues tonight. They’ve experimented with a variety of pop sounds through their discography, and their 2013 release Heartthrob goes full 1980s with synth-heavy pop songs about crushes. What’s Eating Gilbert opens. Info here.
