10 Things to Do This Weekend: Sept. 26-Sept. 29, 2013

Thursday, Sept. 26
The annual Cutting Edge Music Conference happens this weekend at the Old U.S. Mint and other locations. It features music business and entertainment law seminars, media workshops and live performances. Info here.

Tonight’s the opening party for the New Orleans Horror Film Fest, a three-day showcase of low-budget horror films from around the world. There will be panel discussions, Q&As and an awards ceremony. Info here.

 

Friday, Sept. 27
Dress in 1940s attire for Stormin’ of the Sazerac, the Roosevelt Hotel’s annual recreation of the day in Sept. 26, 1949, when the Sazerac Bar started admitting women year round. The event starts with a brunch in the Blue Room and continues in the Sazerac Bar. Info here.

NOMA hosts Love in the Garden, the museum’s annual fete of New Orleans artists in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The Brass-A-Holics perform and more than 50 restaurants will be serving food. Info here.

Jerry Seinfeld is the first to hit the stage for the long-awaited re-opening of the Saenger Theatre this weekend. Known for his eponymous sitcom, the comedian is still staying relevant with his web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” He performs three shows this weekend. Info here.

Lee Blessing’s Patient A, a play about one of the first-known case of HIV transmission, opens at Loyola University tonight. The Oct. 3 production includes a post-performance panel discussion. Info here.

Kevin McDonald from the Canadian sketch comedy troupe Kids in the Hall is in town, and he’ll be at a special screening of the group’s feature film Brain Candy. He’ll also be the guest monologist for Saturday’s The Megaphone Show at The New Movement, which will be a fundraiser for Hell Yes Fest. Info here and here.

 

Saturday, Sept. 28
It’s Smithsonian’s Museum Day, which means museums around town are offering free admission for the day (like the Smithsonian museums do). Go here for participating museums and for your free ticket to print.

You can sample more than 200 national and local beers at New Orleans on Tap, the Bulldog and LA/SPCA’s annual festival at City Park. Billy Iuso and the Restless Natives, New Orleans Nightcrawlers and Royal Teeth perform. Info here.

Here’s one 5K that’s guaranteed to have a fun post-race party: The Tipitina’s Foundation hosts the Rhythm and Blues Run, where musician/band costumes are encouraged and the post-race show includes Bonerama and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Info here.
