17th annual Voodoo Festival: Voodoo religious tradition demystified

Brandi Kelley is the owner of Voodoo Authentica in the French Quarter. A Voodoo practitioner herself, Brandi notes that most people do not realize that Voodoo is an authentic religion. In this podcast, Brandi demystifies this often misunderstood religious tradition. She points out the connection Voodoo in New Orleans has with Catholicism and describes how slavery played a part in the evolution of New Orleans Voodoo. One interesting parallel Brandi mentions is that just as Catholics pray to Christian saints for blessings, Voodoo practitioners pray to Voodoo spirits for blessings. The 17th annual Voodoo Festival will be on Halloween, October 31, 2015 at 612 Rue Dumaine in the French Quarter; activities will begin at 1:00 p.m. In this interview, Brandi offers a brief overview of the day and evening events; for additional information, visit http://voodooauthentica.com
