35th Annual Holiday Home Tour

Saturday and Sunday December 11 & 12, 2010

The Preservation Resource Center is now in its 36th year of preserving, restoring and revitalizing New Orleans’ historic architecture and neighborhoods.

Since 1974, the PRC has been a critical force in breathing life back into this city’s at-risk homes and neighborhoods, including Julia Street, the Warehouse District, the Lower Garden District, Holy Cross and more.

And since Hurricane Katrina alone, the PRC has restored approximately 300 houses, an investment value of more than $10 million. This investment is not just theoretical; the PRC is making a concrete impact on the local economy, with more than 90 employees and countless construction projects, which are in turn triggering their own ripple effects in the economy and in the local revitalization cycle. Additionally, we are emerging as leaders in the race toward sustainability and green construction, as our philosophy that “the greenest house is the one already built” takes a firmer grasp on the local consciousness.

Join the PRC in our quest to rejuvenate our historic architecture and neighborhoods. Together, we will preserve, restore and revitalize New Orleans.

History of the Holiday Home Tour
The first Holiday Home Tour was held in 1975 to raise funds for the Preservation Resource Center and its budding programs. Held on the evening of Dec. 17, the inaugural tour was a candlelit stroll through four Garden District homes on First Street. Each home featured food, drinks and live music. PRC’s December issue of Preservation in Print ran a feature on the tour, stating, “This Candlelight Christmas Celebration will surely become a new tradition for our historic city….”  Considered a great success, the tour was attended by 400 people.

Now a New Orleans tradition in its 35th year, the Holiday Home Tour has greatly expanded, becoming one of the PRC’s top fundraising events. The PRC has preserved the charm and history of the original tour while adding to its size and scope. Today’s tour spans an entire weekend, giving tour-goers an opportunity to see seven Garden District homes over the course of two days at their own leisurely pace. It also features a holiday boutique, a professionally catered café and a ticketed patron party. Today, the tour attracts thousands of local residents and out-of-town visitors.

The Holiday Home Tour is just one of the many ways the PRC celebrates our city’s architecture and neighborhoods. Support the PRC’s good works by surrounding yourself with family and friends, taking a leisurely stroll through the Garden District, shopping at the holiday boutique and seeing up close the dazzling decorations on display in these beautiful homes. Join the PRC in celebrating our city’s history and architecture – in the holiday spirit of the Garden District!
