For the first year, Raintree Children and Family Services decided to celebrate a community activist at its annual gala. Because it was the first time, Raintree wanted to choose someone exemplary—and the group did just that: Charles Buck Mayer was honored at the March 4 gala for his dedication, generosity and service to the community. In addition to his work with Raintree, Charles is also involved with the United Way, the German Protestant Orphan Asylum and the New Orleans Museum of Art, to name just a few. Touched by the award, Charles’ acceptance speech, according to those who attended, barely left a dry eye in the house. That was the only moment the filled-to-the-brim ballroom at the JW Marriott sat still, because soon guests were up mingling, bidding on silent auction items, sampling the buffet, sipping on specialty martinis or dancing to music from Gumbo. There was also a live auction with great jewelry, dinners and other deluxe items.
The event was considered the “best one yet,” according to a partygoer. Proceeds benefit Raintree, which is a nonprofit agency providing assistance to children and adults in the Greater New Orleans Area. •
