A Little Shop Talk

Let’s talk about fall shopping. On one hand, it’s 90 degrees outside, we’re still grappling with COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida and those old cotton/linen “soft clothes” seem like a cozy respite from it all. On the other hand, schools are back in session, small gatherings are commencing and the latest denim, boots and sweater styles are calling out wildly through the shop windows, “Pick me! It will be cooler soon, I promise!”

What’s a shopper to do? Wait around for the cool weather to actually show up, or plan for that glorious day when it does?

I say shop! This fall, let’s try to shop ourselves out of the relentless hardships facing this city. Let’s jump to the sweet spot where the seasons change and the world feels normal again. And whether we’re dealing with life’s daily struggles, the weather or even fashion, we must believe that new things lie ahead.

Let’s view fall shopping as a declaration that things are moving forward. Let’s pledge to shop small and shop local! Let’s remind ourselves that the galleries, boutiques and gift shops along Magazine Street, Metairie Road, Royal Street, Harrison Avenue and more are part of what makes this city so special. They need us to survive and we need to show up for them. Below, I’ve compiled a list of shopping events and fall fashion recommendations that will keep you looking chic through tailgating season. Cheers to that!
