NEW ORLEANS (press release) – A new walking krewe will roll through the French Quarter this Carnival season on Jan. 13, 2024 filling a weekend that previously did not have a parade on the books.
Krewe Mosaïque was created by members of parading groups including Krewe de Mayahuel, the hATTAS,…and Boleyns, Trashformers, Krewe of Conus, and Kreweleidoscope. Co-Founder Terese Aiello said the krewe aims to simplify the parading experience by eliminating the aspects of an overall theme, royalty, and krewe floats. As a result, each subkrewe gets to shine on its own as a colorful tile that comes together to create a beautiful mosaic of art, culture, and fun.
“We want to celebrate the incredible talent and artistry that smaller walking krewes put forth when creating their krewe costumes, carts, and throws, as well as to celebrate aspects of New Orleans history and culture,” said Aiello. “We want the focus to be on the grace and beauty created by each krewe “tile,” with equal importance.”
Krewe Mosaïque is seeking additional krewe “tiles” to join their parade, which will follow a 12-block route, starting at Armstrong Park and ending at the Ursulines Convent. All Mosaïque ‘tiles’ must feature at least 50 percent DIY elements OR have a notable or historical/cultural element. They must also have lighted elements in their costumes or contraptions, and cannot represent religious, political, or sexual elements. At least half of all throws must be handmade.
As a walking parade, all contraptions must be pushed, pedaled, or powered by electric motors and floats cannot carry riders.
Subkrewes interested in participating in Mosaïque should fill out an application at bit.ly/krewe-mosaique-application. Tile applications close on Dec. 15.
“We’re looking for krewes that you may not have seen in other parades, that pay homage to a piece of New Orleans history and culture. There are so many creative possibilities and we’re really excited to be able to give budding krewes the chance to develop their ideas into a beautiful new walking krewe,” said Aiello.
Krewe Mosaïque will host a fundraising weekend, which includes a “Nightmare Before Christmas”-themed fundraiser on Dec. 9. The Nightmare Before 12th Night Bar Crawl features drink specials, VIP treats, a raffle and an excuse to wear a costume. The next day, Mosaïque will host a holiday art market at Kajun’s Karaoke Bar courtyard (2256 St Claude Ave.) from noon to 5 p.m.
A limited number of early-bird discounted regular and VIP tickets available until Nov. 30. Visit bit.ly/mosaique-pub-crawl-tickets for more information.
