A note from Bev

We are so pleased to bring to you the United Way’s 2010 Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award Gala on our cover this month! Thanks so much to co-chairs Kim Sport and Barbara Turner Windhorst; Clancy Dubos, who will serve as Master of Ceremonies; board chairman Jose Suquet; and, most importantly, this year’s honoree, Bill Goldring. Goldring was chosen because of the scope of his philanthropic leadership and his many years of selfless service to so many causes in our great city and our entire region. He has displayed a model for other philanthropists as a partner with United Way, personally and through the Goldring Family and Woldenberg foundations. The gala will be held on November 20 at the Roosevelt New Orleans Hotel; don’t miss this opportunity to congratulate him on a well-deserved honor! To purchase tickets, visit www.unitedwaynola.org/tocqueville or call 827-6846.

We are especially honored to present our St. Charles Avenue’s Activists of the Year awards to Gayle and Tom Benson, and our Unsung Hero award to Robert Fogarty. So many of you see the Bensons week after week because they own the New Orleans Saints, but you would be amazed by the philanthropic work that each of them performs here and all over the country. It is a departure for us to honor only three people, but you’ll see why when you read about the projects they support to make our city and country stronger! While you may have seen Robert Fogarty’s “Dear New Orleans” pictures (the ones where people inscribe love notes to New Orleans on their hands) on Facebook or online, you might not know about Evacuteer.org, created by Fogarty after Hurricane Gustav, which “mobilizes New Orleanians willing to push their boundaries for the collective good.” Read more about the Bensons’ and Fogarty’s efforts on page 41 and join us on November 17 at 6 p.m. at the Martin Lawrence Gallery located at 633 Royal St. to honor their efforts.

We have a whole section on “What’s Hot in Home Furnishings.” Everyone talks about “nesting” these days, so get inspiration from sconces to sideboards.

I can’t wait to share with you Nathalie and Louis Read’s wedding from 1943. Nat just celebrated her 90th birthday at her daughter and son-in-law’s home (Susan and Doug Johnson’s) in grand style and she looks incredible now, but in the pictures from the wedding Nat looks like a movie star. Everyone remembers Louis Read as an incredible philanthropist who received the Loving Cup and started one of the first television stations in the United States.
