A Note from Bev

We are so proud to present KIDsmART on our cover this month! They are having their ninth celebration of “Cocktails for KIDsmART” at the incredible home of Betsy and Gary Laborde on St. Charles Avenue. The patron party begins at 6:30 p.m. on November 3, and the champagne reception will feature food by Joel Event Planning and Catering.

Featured guest Charles Bohn will present a hand-thrown ceramic bowl to each sponsor and patron. Thanks so much to our cover models:

Hostess Betsy Laborde, event co-chairs Judith Barnes-Cochran and Robin Benton-Crutcher and board chairman R. Campbell Hutchinson. They are hoping you’ll be a sponsor or patron, so call 410-1990 to get more information and to purchase your tickets. You don’t want to miss this party or your original piece of art. You all know that KIDsmART is the invention of Allison Stuart and Campbell Hutchinson, who believed that you could transform the way children learn in public schools by integrating art into the curricula. They are in 14 schools in Orleans and Jefferson parishes; more than 3,300 students and 475 teachers take part!

I am personally so excited that we have a new member of the St. Charles Avenue team and want to welcome Shelby Westfeldt who will be writing a column called “Cruisin’ the Crescent.” Be sure to let Shelby know about any important fundraisers or parties that you’re having or that you know about (Shelby@MyNewOrleans.com); she’d love to put a mention, along with a picture, in the magazine!

“What’s Hot for Art” is all about updating your home by obtaining the perfect piece of art. While you’re sprucing up your house, check out our special sections on antiques and holiday entertaining, which will give you tips on how to purchase the perfect piece as well as little things that add a lot to any soirée.

Poydras Home is having its annual Home Art Show on November 5 and 6 at 5354 Magazine St. They will have 2,500 original pieces of art: oil paintings on canvas, watercolors, acrylics, photography, glass art and fine jewelry, bronzes and stone, copper, clay and mixed media sculptures. Call Charlotte Thomas at 897-0535 to become a sponsor or a patron, or to purchase tickets.

The Southern Garden Symposium, October 14 and 15 in St. Francisville, comes complete with incredible speakers and of course the fabulous Gen Trimble at her Afton Villa Plantation – it isn’t too late to sign up. Chairman Mary Frances Smart says you don’t want to miss this $65 per day event. Please call (225) 635-3738 or email banowetz.@bellsouth.net for more information.

Parkway Partners is giving the Green Spirit Award to Marianne and Alan Mumford of Landscape Images who have donated so much of their time and talents towards out city. You can still be a sponsor or patron by calling 620-2224. The patron party will be at the Frierson’s home on October 27 and “Feast with the Stars” jazz brunch will be held on the 30th.

I have been traveling the neighborhood and want you to know about two of my favorite finds: LeVisage Day Spa and Santa Fe Tapas.

LeVisage (8110 Hampson St.) was created to deliver high-end luxury services to Uptown New Orleanians, and they want to incorporate wellness into our daily routines. A woman’s body responds to the stresses in her life, and her skin and body care need to reflect and support that. The owners have over 30 years’ experience in the wellness and beauty industry and they will design innovative regimens for each client. They especially teach us how to take care of ourselves outside of the spa and design daily routines for each of us.

After your trip to LeVisage, try a visit to Santa Fe Tapas (1327 St. Charles Ave.).

Chefs Mario Abdu and Hunter Daniels create tapas daily with the freshest Louisiana ingredients. Their motto is “Where the South meets the West.” We had wild mushroom crostini, seafood empanadas and tres leches cake with Ponchatoula strawberry coulis.

They also have live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Have a great and safe Halloween!
