A note from Bev

Our December cover, which features some of the most incredible activists in our city, is a source of tremendous pride for our magazine! Celebrating our 15th anniversary are: Mimi Robinson Bowen, Leah Chase, Dr. Norman Francis, Leslie R. Jacobs, Diana Monroe Lewis, Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, James J. Reiss Jr. and Suzanne Walther Rusovich. Each of our honorees has exemplified leadership and love for our city through the amazing projects they have taken on. By honoring these recipients, we urge you to take on a project through which you can make a difference – a project about which you’re passionate! Think about past recipients: Ruthie Frierson with Citizens For One Greater New Orleans; Anne Milling with Women Of the Storm; Anthony Recasner with the Recovery School District and the Edible Schoolyard at Samuel Green School; Fran Villere with the Greater New Orleans Foundation; Phyllis Taylor with the National World War II Museum – just about everything this city holds dear! More former honorees include: Gayle and Tom Benson; Louellen and Darryl Berger; Walda and Sydney Besthoff; Robert Brown; Barbara Bush; Ana and Dr. Juan Gershanik; Bill Goldring; Dr. Stephen Hales; Bill Hines; King Milling; Roger Ogden; Julie Wise Oreck; and Anne Redd. Thank you to all of you who help New Orleans be the greatest city ever!

Be sure to check out our calendar of events. YA/YA will be on December 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World; the Honey Island Swamp Band and Charmaine Neville will rock through the night and art by the YA/YA artists will make for lots of incredible gifts for the holidays.

The next night, December 9, Allison Tiller, Scott Duggins and our own Jill Varney want you to come to the Multiple Sclerosis Renaissance Party and they promise you’ll have great fun – how could you miss with Louisiana Spice? There will be a great buffet and an open bar. It is at the Renaissance Arts Hotel at 700 Tchoupitoulas St. Call 322-3790 for tickets, which are $150 a person (35 or younger is $100 a person).

The holidays are coming, so get ready to buy incredible jewelry for your significant other by checking out “What’s Hot,” which features some of the best jewelry available in our city.

While we’re on the subject of jewelry, check out Ellen Logan’s fabulous jewelry at The Blues Jean Bar, or look online at etsy.com/people/EllenLJewelryLLC. Logan features accent necklaces and drop earrings using semi-precious stones, gold-filled chains and vermeil. She also sells in stores in Columbia, S.C. and Mountain Brook, Ala., and is expanding to others all over the country.

My holiday present to you is a story about my wonderful friend John Rowland of Southern Hospitality Catering – a kind man with a big heart – who’s back in business at his new place after a terrible fire. His friends and colleagues stepped up to the plate and helped him through a horrific time, and he thanked them with a great party.

Have a safe and spectacular Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza. Thanks so much for 15 amazing years with St. Charles Avenue magazine!
