A Note from Bev

What an honor it is for us to feature the Ogden Museum of Southern Art on our September Cover for their wildly successful fundraiser, O What A Night!

Internationally known architect, and one of our favorite New Orleanians, Arthur Q. Davis is receiving the Opus Award – an honor he richly deserves! This award is given to a member of the arts community whose life’s work constitutes a major contribution to the cultural landscape. Along with Arthur, we’re featuring co-chairs Virginia Saussy and Robin Burgess, and University of New Orleans Chancellor Tim Ryan.

The patron party is Friday, October 17, at the beautiful St. Charles Avenue home of Fran and George Villere, where the preview party and auction will be held for all of you VIPs. Then on Saturday, October 18, you’ll be treated to fabulous food prepared by Chef John Currence, owner and chef at the City Grocery in Oxford, Miss. Of course there will be cocktails, beautiful wines, live music and an auction conducted by Sotheby’s auctioneer and vice-chairman Jamie Niven. You don’t want to miss this! Call 539-9613 for tickets and information.

While you’re getting ready for all of the fall parties, you’ll want to check out our column Skin Deep, this month highlighting upcoming fall trends. Next month we’re featuring a favorite New Orleanian and giving her simple ways to update her look!
What’s Hot illustrates you how to go bold with neutral colors this fall by showcasing the latest in fashion accessories – you know that they’re what make the outfit au courrant!

Now that you’ve got a new fabulous fall outfit, you’re ready to go to The Newcomb Art Gallery in the Woldenberg Art Center on Tulane’s campus! I just spoke with the new director, Charles Lovell, and he’s making the gallery the destination for visual art Uptown, and indeed for the whole city. Two great shows coming up are “Vital Signs,” open now through October 19, and “Prospect.1 (P.1)” New Orleans. This Art Biennial will showcase new artistic practices and an array of programs benefiting the local community, Dan Cameron from the CAC will be running the entire show. Be sure to check out Iranian Artist, Shirin Neshap at the Newcomb Art Gallery!

Speaking of getting ready for fall, Dr. Khoobehi is featuring the latest for his plastic surgery patients. He is the only doctor in the state to feature Axis Three – a 3-D Virtual Imaging machine that allows patients to view what their breast would look like with different sized implants before the surgery! He’s also featuring Smartlipo, which is a laser procedure that can melt fat away in those nagging small areas like the neck, arms and love handles. The best is that it can be done in the office under local anesthesia.

We are featuring The STAIR program this month and I urge all of you to take out just one-and-a-half-hours a week to tutor a child that truly needs your help. This program helps students in Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemine public school second graders! If you don’t have time to come every week, you can sponsor a student for a year, which costs only $750. Our schools are making great strides so definitely be a part of it! Volunteer at a school near you!
