Over 1,200 visitors filled the Louisiana Children’s Museum on Saturday, May 11, to travel the world. Excited children and their families explored the far-off destinations and sampled the exotic cuisine of Argentina, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ireland, Monaco, Panama and Vietnam. Dr. Margaret Butler, Classics Professor at Tulane University, acted as event chair and orchestrated an educational and fun-filled experience. This year’s theme, “A World of Big Ideas”, focused on the inventions, innovations and advancements in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math in each represented country. Families engaged in such activities as dino digging in Argentina, working on a model of the Panama Canal, listening to unique international music and hearing children’s stories from different countries.
The exhibit of each country featured a wide range of authentic cuisines. Visitors savored the flavors of such dishes as Brazilian pan de quejo, sweet Vietnamese rice custard and shepherd’s pie provided by chef Matt Murphy of Irish House. Throughout the event, live cultural performances took center stage. Argentine Tango, Irish step dancing and a Vietnamese fashion show were among some of the highlights.
This year, the event raised over $70,000 that will go towards the museum’s year-round educational programs and exhibits.
