Acadiana Celebrates the Arts for Memorial Day Weekend

For many of us, the upcoming weekend has one extra day, and we’re taking advantage of it with a slew of new events that combine artistic talent and community building. An innovative songwriting festival returns with more workshops and performances, and innovative news outlets celebrate their successes and toast to the future. A popular bakery celebrates its brick and mortar establishment, and the state fair brings a surprise element showcasing some of our most recognizable DJs.

Don’t worry. With Monday off, you’ll have plenty of time to recover.

5/21-5/26: SOLO Fest 2019: The first major event of the week isn’t an event, but a weeklong workshop and performance series. The South Louisiana Songwriters Festival and Workshop will feature three evenings of shows as well as a two-day festival. Writers will collaborate for four days then debut their creations over the last two days of the festival. In addition to performing, the artists will detail the audience on their processes and inspirations. Tickets are available at Ticketweb.com for specific events, like the Songs Over Style performance and seminar held by CC Adcock, as well as for weekend passes.

5/23: The Current 3.0 Kickoff: Lafayette’s first digital-native news organization will celebrate its next wave with a belated one-year birthday party at the Jefferson Street Pub from 6-8 p.m. Like any good birthday party, this party includes pizza from Central, games, giveaways, gimmicks to make you care about local news and a few surprises. This event is free to attend.

5/23: Reveal Launch Party: Another news outlet will celebrate its inception this Thursday! Corner Bar of Lafayette will host the Reveal launch party from 4-6 p.m. Thursday evening. Giveaways include a chance to see The Revivalists May 30, a charcuterie board from Graze Acadiana, a framed piece from local artist and shop owner Cayla Zeek and free sessions at Modern Acupuncture. This is also a free event.

5/24: Date Night Ft. Battle of the DJs: The Cajun Heartland State Fair returns this week, and with it comes the first-ever Date Night at the Cajundome. From 8-10 p.m., 94.5 KSMB’s DJ Miyagi will face off with Q955 KRRQ’s DJ Chill live on stage. Free parking is available at Cajun Field. Admission into the fair is $3 for guests 3 and older. For more information, visit Cajundome.com/chsf2019.

5/24: Bon Vie Macarons + Kali Picard Art Pop-up and Dessert Show: The brand-new Bon Vie Macarons will celebrate its first bakery case with a pop-up art show! This Friday, macaron enthusiasts 21 and older are invited to sip champagne and peruse Picard’s colorful, feminine pieces from 6-8 p.m. The macarons will be appropriately art-inspired, and attendees can look forward to getting a first peek at the shop.
