Adding Protein Powder to Your Routine

An old friend of mine is a successful personal trainer. Over the years, I’ve witnessed him transform his own body, so I trust his opinion on all things fitness. Recently, concerned about my overall lack of muscular definition, I asked him, “What do you think is wrong with my diet?” Without hesitation, he replied, “I can tell just by looking at you, you’re not getting enough protein.” And there it was. That word again. Protein just keeps popping up everywhere these days. At the supermarket, gym and even on Instagram, I’m relentlessly nudged to engage. So, being over 45, I guess it’s time.

According to the National Library of Medicine, “The importance of dietary protein cannot be underestimated in the diets of older adults; inadequate protein intake contributes to a decrease in reserve capacity, increased skin fragility, decreased immune function, poorer healing, and longer recuperation from illness.” I am not a dietician and cannot offer real health advice, but this seems like a good enough reason to up my intake. Foods like lentils, Greek yogurt, fish and cottage cheese are all high in protein, but what if I can’t squeeze those in every week? That’s where a no fail backup plan comes in handy. So, I surveyed a few experts to find a protein powder that actually tastes good (most taste like vitamins to me). Not all powders are created the same. Whether you want vegan, keto, bovine or marine, be sure to take note of your preferences before your purchase.

Here’s the feedback from trusted sources I’ve gotten so far. Local trainer Nathan Aronson recommends Precision Protein powder from Temple Nutrition, especially the fun flavors like cinnamon cereal.  He likes to mix it with the Fairlife brand of whole milk. Bonus, use code NA10 for 10% discount. The Vibrant Market suggests a plant-based protein like Anima Mundi Chocolate Protein or ordering one of their house-made tonics and adding a bit of Agent Nateur’s Holi Mane. Lastly, another trusted friend recommends the Choclate Whey flavor by Naked Nutrition and Peanut Butter Chocolate powder by Just Ingredients. Both are super clean and transparent about their ingredients.

As always, consult your health care professional for the best/safest recommendations, and before adding anything new to your routine. I’m still on my journey to find the best, so let me know which you prefer!
