An Active Life

St. Charles Avenue’s annual Activist Awards.

Everyone knows St. Charles Avenue magazine is dedicated to the promotion of philanthropy throughout the city. Once a year, we take it one step further by honoring a select group of individuals who make our city great and who work ceaselessly with and for nonprofit organizations to better the community. The November issue presented our annual list of Activists of the Year, as well as our Unsung Hero. The honorees were Anne Milling of Women of the Storm, King Milling, Ruthie Frierson of Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans, Julie Wise Oreck and Robert W. Brown. Our Unsung Hero honor went to Andre Perry. Martin Lawrence Gallery on Royal Street hosted the November 19, 2008 soiree, which was an intimate gathering of the honorees, as well as their family and friends. Renowned glass artist Andrew Brott designed the beautiful and lithe sea oat awards specially for the six honorees. Executive Editor Bev Church gave a wonderful introduction to each person individually, then Editor-in-Chief Errol Laborde thanked guests near the end of the evening with kind parting words. Guests enjoyed light bites and prosecco throughout the night, and soft jazz played by Matt Soggin kept the mood light-hearted.
