An Affair To Remember

Over the past few weeks, we have been preparing for the royal Big Day – that of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. On May 19, 2018, our questions about what the bride would wear and how the day would unfold were answered.

After a star-studded parade of wedding guests – including Oprah, tennis star Serena Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian, Victoria “Posh Spice” and David Beckham and George and Amal Clooney – the bride emerged from a Rolls Royce in a gorgeous Givenchy gown. The design was simple, classic and chic – which did not get many good reviews from opinionated Twitter commentators due to its lack of pizazz – and acted as a perfect silhouette for the glamorous second-time bride. Markle’s veil, in our opinion, was the showstopper of the day. The 16-foot-long veil was embroidered with 53 lace flowers, each representing a different country in the Commonwealth.

The Queen allowed for both Prince Harry and Prince William to sport military uniforms for the Big Day. Each prince wore the frockcoat uniform of the Household Cavalry’s Blues and Royals – which, we read, is one of the oldest U.K. regiments and is considered the “monarch’s trusted guardians.”

The day, as a whole, had the ability to be a bit more laidback than Prince William’s 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton, including an unexpected breathtaking moment by South-East England-based gospel choir The Kingdom Choir and their rendition of “Stand by Me” and a moving sermon by Bishop Michael Curry, the first African-American presiding bishop of the American Episcopal Church (full text can be found here).

An additional show-stopping fashion moment came in the evening when the newly married Duke and Duchess stepped out of Windsor Castle to make their way to the evening reception held by Prince Charles at Frogmore House. The Duchess wore a halter top, sheath Stella McCartney dress, hair still pulled back, and the Duke opted for a very James Bond-like tux as they darted away in an open-top light blue, electric Jaguar.

We are sure that newly engaged brides will be taking a note or two from the Duchess’ two wedding looks, local bridal shops showed off their inventory with their own royal wedding-inspired looks New Orleans brides can get their hands on.
