If you have young children, or are simply a child at heart, the Crescent City estate auction of New Orleans-based real estate developer, Joe Jaeger Jr., is one you won’t want to miss. Even without knowing this prolific businessman personally, it’s clear he had a love of adventure and a cheeky sense of humor. Who else could own both a Polychromed Carousel Horse and a replica of King Tut’s throne? When I phoned the gallery yesterday, they had to shut the office door to hear me above the pinging of the pinball machines on offer. His enjoyment of carnival games and superheroes is not lost on my family. With nothing to do before school starts, my two young boys are clambering to get to the auction showroom; something I never thought I’d say. Â
Still, in spite of the lighthearted outer peel of this collection, the fruit inside reflects a genuine appreciation for a wide range of serious artists. Beyond the literally larger-than-life toys, and collectibles, there are nuanced, delicate works to counter them. My kids want to go for the life sized Batman figure but I will be there for the vast nude collection. Something tells me my boys will get a kick out of those too!
