New Orleans Landmark Opens in Destin, Florida
Camellia Grill® preserves its New Orleans traditions Destin, FL (April 8, 2009)–It was almost two years ago to the day that Camellia Grill®, the legendary diner in Uptown New Orleans, opened its doors for the first time since Hurricane Katrina. On Thursday, April 16, at 6:00 AM, Camellia Grill® will celebrate another first: It will open in Destin, Florida, its first venue outside of New Orleans. Located at Harbor Walk Village, Camellia Grill® joins Pat O’Brien’s and Commander’s Palace, adjacent to the Emerald Grand at the foot of the Destin Bridge, overlooking the Destin Harbor. Camellia Grill® will celebrate its opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 16, at 4:00 PM. All are invited. Destin Mayor Craig Barker says, “One of the most popular beach destinations in the United States, Destin is proud to welcome its newest New Orleans resident. Like Destin, Camellia Grill is a popular family tradition. We as a community are thrilled that you have selected Destin as your ‘home away from home’.” Guests will enjoy the homey feel of the diner. The menu from New Orleans will remain intact as patrons get their fix of chocolate freezes, pecan pie, chili omelets and Mardi Gras sandwiches. Serving these food favorites will be a Destin staff reminiscent of the “personality plus” New Orleans staff. The Camellia Grill® waiters are just as much part of the tradition as straw popping and white linen napkins. Destin may even see waitresses rounding out the staff of 30.
According to Destin resident Jimmy Crawford, general manager of Camellia Grill® Destin, “Camellia Grill® has been preserved in New Orleans. Now Destin diners can enjoy the same spirited atmosphere and mouth watering menu as the original Camellia Grill®. “Time, care and effort have been invested to ensure that every detail which makes Camellia Grill® beloved has been replicated, including the pink paint and green stools.” One significant icon that owner Hicham Khodr discovered on eBay® is the Mickey Mouse clock that hangs prominently over the counter. He even nabbed two, anticipating a future Camellia Grill® in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. But there will be differences between the two venues in order to capture the Destin atmosphere. Rather than 29 stools, Camellia Grill® Destin will have 46 stools, meaning that those craving Camellia Grill® specials may not have to wait as long in the traditional line outside in the hot sun. And Camellia Grill® Destin will have a deck overlooking the beach, where one can catch the rays while chilling out with Camellia Grill® fare and freezes. Inside, diners will recall the signature tile floor, albeit much brighter and shinier than its 61 year old counterpart in New Orleans. “And beach attire is certainly appropriate,” explains Crawford. “We know that Destin is a casual community, and we want to accommodate that.” He adds, “While visitors are important to Camellia Grill® Destin, we want to become part of the fabric and culture of Destin. To that end, we want to get to know the locals, their families and friends. We want to call them by name and invite them to be part of our Camellia Grill® Destin family.” According to Khodr, “Camellia Grill® is a part of the heartbeat of New Orleans. Our hope is that it becomes a part of the heartbeat of Destin.” Tentative hours of operation for Camellia Grill® Destin are from 8:00 AM to Midnight, 7 days a week.
Major credit cards are accepted. Construction on Camellia Grill® Destin began in December, 2008 and is a development of Peter Bos, who also developed Harbor Walk in Destin. Head of Operations is Brian Molony. Besides owning Camellia Grill® New Orleans and Destin, Hicham Khodr of New Orleans also owns or has an interest in The Gumbo Shop, Byblos and NOLA, all in New Orleans. Camellia Grill® Destin is located in Harbor Walk Village on Highway 98 at the foot of the Destin Bridge, the Western-most point of Destin. Address:
