The Humane Society of Louisiana leads the fight against cruelty to animals statewide. Founded in New Orleans in 1988, the grassroots local charity works with law enforcement to accept custody of animals seized in abuse cases and operates diverse programs to prevent cruelty. Fueled by a small staff and a wide network of volunteers, the group rescues animals from overcrowded shelters, provides disaster relief services, operates the Mardi Gras horse adoption program, and more.
