Formed in 1988, the Humane Society of Louisiana is one of the largest animal protection organizations in the state. They have an effective animal cruelty and prevention program, rehome horses after each Mardi Gras season, transport animals to new homes, and campaign for pro-animal policies and programs. The group also operates three animal care facilities, which include a horse and donkey sanctuary, and opened their new headquarters in Gretna, not far from City Hall, in 2023.
