New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter

Homelessness is heartbreaking, but especially so for children. No child should ever be homeless or hungry, and The New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter (NOWCS) is at the forefront of efforts to support families in need of assistance. Childhood homelessness can lead to many debilitating outcomes, from poor physical and mental health to developmental and academic delays. Each year, NOWCS serves around 250-300 individuals, two-thirds of whom are children ages 18 or younger. As one of the largest shelters in the Greater New Orleans area able to serve homeless families with children, NOWCS is a regional leader in combating child homelessness and food insecurity while also being the only Greater New Orleans shelter to accept mothers past their first trimester of pregnancy and intact families, meaning an adult male is part of the family unit. Having moved into a new Mid City facility in early 2024, the NOWCS is now able to double its capacity to house and serve, and promises to be a haven for homeless families with children in the New Orleans area.
