Avenue’s Activists

St. Charles Avenue magazine’s 15th anniversary celebrated charitable locals on Wednesday, December 7 at their “2011 Activists of the Year” event. The event took place at the appropriately located St. Charles Avenue Columns Hotel.

The hotel itself catered the activist event. The menu included a luscious fruit-and-fondue station, decadent turkey and roast beef carving stations, classic turtle soup, penne primavera, pesto pasta, marinated crab claws, and spinach puff pastries. The bar also featured champagne, beer, and wine. Banjo player John Parker provided pleasing melodies for the activists and attendants.

The eight honored 2011 activists of the year were Mimi Robinson Bowen, Leah Chase, Dr. Norman Francis, Leslie R. Jacobs, Diana Monroe Lewis, Dr. E. Ralph Lupin, James J. Reiss Jr. and Suzanne Walther Rusovich. These award-winning men and women provide philanthropic contributions of time and donations in nearly every area, from Women of the Storm to Urban League to Teach for America. To commemorate these humble humanitarian efforts and their St. Charles Avenue Activist achievements each activist was given a hand-blown, etched glass ornament and a St. Charles Avenue Activist flag.
