Best Places for King Cakes in New Orleans

In New Orleans, we don’t divide our year by the typical winter, spring, summer and fall. We mark our calendar by football season, crawfish season and Carnival. Parades are starting up today and pushing the Carnival season into full force, so the editor’s decided to focus on the more important aspect of the season: king cake! This week, we’re sharing our favorite restaurants and bakeries to scoop up Carnival’s favorite sweet (or savory) treat.

Note: these are by no means all of the king cakes around – there are so many, including savory, just ask Matt Haines with “The Big Book of King Cake” – but a few of our favorites right now. This week, Jennifer Samuels of the King Cake Hub is the subject of the “Beyond the Beads” Mardi Gras podcast. Take a listen and then head to the hub to try over 30 different king cakes from around the city.

Dong Phuong Bakery

Always a fan-favorite. Brings a little something different to the mix.

Gracious Bakery + Café

“Gracious Bakery’s “regular” king cake is by no means regular. Plus, they put out new flavors – this weekend is oreo!”

-Ashley McLellan
Editor, New Orleans Magazine

Nolita Bakery

“Martha is one of my favorite people, so there is a bias, but i LOVE anything that comes out of the bakery, king cake included!”

-Kelly Massicot
Digital Media Editor

La Boulangerie

“La Boulangerie for its galette des rois. It is a flakey frangipane filled dream treat and as beautiful as it is delicious. ”

-Reine Dugas
Editor, Louisiana Life/Acadiana Profile

Emeril's

I’m not sure if Emeril’s is still in collaboration with NOCCA, but they had a Bananas Foster King Cake that was one of the best things ever made!

Joe's Cafe - Metairie

Do not sleep on the donut king cake… it’s everything you could ever want.
