Unlike bridal couture, which is influenced by style and design a year before ever making an appearance, when it comes to hair and makeup trends, what’s “in” is more current and tangible in the moment. Also these trends, especially involving your tresses, have the ability to outlast clothing trends of a certain time or season.

Because hair is so important in bringing together a bride’s entire bridal look, we asked an expert to give her opinion on modern, chic hairstyles being worn by the masses. Emily LaBorde, owner of Bleu, a Blow Dry Bar on Metairie Road, gave us the scoop on all things hair.

What is popular this fall and winter for bridal hair?

Braids. Whether super whimsical and in a long fishtail, used in a romantic half up or included in an intricate up do, braids are the hottest trend for fall bridal hair.

Is there any style you see becoming unexpectedly popular this season?

A resurfacing of the classic chignon has been a recent request in many of our bridal trials lately. This chic, elegant style is perfect for the bride who desires a more mature, structured look versus a loose, undone one.

What steps should a bride take to make sure her hair is perfect for her wedding day?

We often encourage our BLEU Brides to come in on their wedding rehearsal dinner day for a fresh blowout. This not only eliminates one thing off their jam-packed to-do list but also ensures that their hair is the perfect ‘day old’ condition, perfect for styling on their Big Day. It is also a fun outing for mother, daughters or for the whole wedding party.

Are there any products you recommend brides and their maids using pre-wedding?

  1. Living Proof's Prime Style Extender is a product we use in each and every BLEU Blowout that forms a protective and weightless barrier against dirt and oil, actually keeping your hair cleaner, longer. By adding this to your pre-wedding routine, ensures your hair will remain wedding day ready all weekend long.
  2. Up dos and styles are best done on "day old" hair, as clean hair tends to be too soft and can slide out of the desired style. Moroccan Oil's Dry Shampoo can be used to add texture to the hair, creating more volume and, or ensuring the style will not fall flat. It is also your best friend if your hair tends to be on the oiler side: simply spray the oily area, fluff at the roots with the blow dryer and your once unworkable hair is transformed versus having to re-wash it.

How far in advance should a bride book a hairstylist for a wedding?

Choosing your hairstylist team should definitely be one of the top five decisions you make in planning a wedding. The way you look and feel on your big day is so important, why leave it to be one of the last decisions you make? Ensuring the team you are working with are professional, able to perform the look you desire and that you feel at ease with are important factors in your selection. We book weddings based on a first come, first deposit paid basis. The earlier you book, the better chance one has to ensure we have the availability to work your wedding.
