Music and excitement filled the evening air on Jan. 12, when the United Negro College Fund held its annual fund-raiser, now called “Ball in the City.” Harrah’s New Orleans Hotel was the site of the patron party, where Leah Chase and BRW were the entertainment. The Original Royal Players Brass Band led a second line parade from the hotel to the Harrah’s Casino Theatre for the gala. There, singing sensation Natalie Cole performed in concert.
And that wasn’t even the end of the evening! Further entertainment via DJ Captain Charles followed at the after-party at Harrah’s Masquerade. The event’s honorary chairpersons included Mr. and Mrs. Alden McDonald Jr., Mayor and Mrs. Ray Nagin, Dr. and Mrs. Norman Francis, Drs. Marvalene Hughes and David Brinks, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hoskins. Well attended with more than 400 guests, the event raised nearly $150,000.
