NEW ORLEANS (press release) – On Sunday, Oct. 8, the Historic BK House & Gardens will host its annual fundraiser, Soirée in the Vieux Carré at 5:30 pm. The festive event will feature music by the Y’at Pack, Amber Rachel & the Sweet Potatoes, and John Rankin, along with a Sunday Supper by Pigeon Catering, open bar, and dancing. The 2023 Soirée in the Vieux Carré will raise funds to support a major capital improvement project, ensuring the long-term viability and versatility of the site. This year’s honorees are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Freeman for their longstanding and generous support of BK House. Individual tickets range from $100 -$250 and may be purchased via this event link.
Just days later, a special evening entitled “Vins du Sud” will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. in the historic Courtyard. The event will feature French varietals from the South of France paired with cuisine by la Madeleine Country French Cafe. The informative session will be offered in English & French by Wesley Kohler-Bergene of Vino Wholesale and is sponsored in part by the Nous Foundation. Thursday, Oct. 26, promises to be a ghoulish evening at the historic property with a spooky movie screening of “Carnival of Souls” on the big screen and a frightfully fun dance party with DJ, The Archivist, spinning a Halloween-inspired soundtrack. Special guests, The Krewe of Vaporwave, will present an installation of chilling and thrilling projections around the house and grounds for an atmospheric experience! Tickets are $15 ($10 for members) and may be purchased via Eventbrite. Light refreshments will be served but guests are encouraged to bring beverages of choice, openers, and extra cups. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. Costumes are welcome.
Two Letterpress Printing Workshops will be offered on Saturdays, Oct. 28, and Nov. 4. This course will delve into the historic and artistic significance of letterpress, tracing its evolution from Gutenberg’s movable type to contemporary applications. Participants will acquire hands-on experience with vintage letterpress forms and machines, learning the intricate art of typesetting and honing skills in inking, impression, and paper selection. Ideal for design enthusiasts, aspiring printers, and history aficionados, this program fosters a deep appreciation for the technical finesse and artistic legacy of letterpress and typesetting, empowering participants to create dynamic printed works. Workshops will run each Saturday from 10 am until 1 pm. Tickets range from $45 – $100 and may be purchased via Eventbrite.
Sounds of Brazil with Amigos do Samba will be showcased on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the BK House. The ensemble specializes in samba traditionally played around a table with a variety of Brazilian percussion, string, and wind instruments. Since 2016, their mission is to bring the “Roda de Samba”, well-known in Brazil, to New Orleans. They feature a mix of US natives, Brazilians, and beyond, including Victoria Douton, Felipe Leite, Fernando Lima, Scott Myers, Leo Oliveira, Tedo Oliveira, Ezra Spira-Cohen, and others. Tickets are $40 ($30 for members). Light refreshments will be served but guests are encouraged to bring their own beverages of choice, openers, and extra cups. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show.
December festivities will include a Holiday Card Making Workshop on Dec. 7, BK’s Annual Kid’s Holiday Tea Party on Dec. 9, and The Magic of Christmas with Tim Laughlin Trio and Yolanda Robinson on Dec. 10.
The Historic BK House & Gardens will celebrate the new year by premiering a Haiti-Louisiana: Tides of Freedom exhibit in collaboration with the Nous Foundation. The exhibit will feature Haitian art and will be curated by Max Jean-Louis. Additional details will be announced.
