Pizza lovers and aficionados of Italian food and culture are flocking to the Warehouse District for New Orleans’ newest pizzeria, Bonci New Orleans. The third stateside installment of Rome-original Bonci Pizza, the opening of Bonci New Orleans follows two Chicago locations. Recognized by the late Anthony Bourdain, Food & Wine, Eater National, and numerous other food-focused media outlets and experts, Bonci specializes in Roman-style al taglio pizza, which is sliced with scissors and sold by the weight with a long and diverse list of ever-changing toppings.
“We decided to open Bonci New Orleans because of the city’s vibrant energy and exciting culinary scene,” says Rick Tasman, President of Bonci USA. “The response so far has been wonderful – people really enjoy the ability to customize what pizza options they are able to enjoy,” he says.
Pizza selections change daily, but a few New Orleans favorites include Potato with Mozzarella, Meatball and Lemon Zucchini Ricotta. Diners can expect many more options as well, with examples such as the Octopus, Sausage and Blueberry, Chicken Parmesan and Soppressata. Up to 20 changing varieties are available daily, and the restaurant boasts a remarkable 1,500 total different recipes for guests looking to dine in, take out, or request catering.
“You can always expect to find something you like, and this style of pizza allows people to mix and match and try a lot of different toppings,” says Tasman.
Unlike other New Orleans pizzas, Bonci’s one-of-a-kind, artisanal pizza is served al taglio, which means cut by the slice with scissors. Made from specially crafted dough, the crust is both crispy and airy. Ordered at the counter, Bonci pizza is custom cut into rectangles with size determined by guest and price determined by weight. In addition to pizza, Bonci also serves up suppli, Roman-inspired rice and pasta balls stuffed with cheeses and meats. Similar to Sicilian arancini, suppli takes three staple fillings – ragu, spaghetti and risotto – and rolls them into packed bundles before frying them for a crispy bite.
The restaurant is located in the Warehouse District at 726 Julia Street. It opens at 11a.m. daily and closes at 9 p.m. on Sundays, at 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. (Insider tip: stop by before 11 a.m. as they always have pizzas ready as early as 9 a.m.) Bonci Pizza is able to cater large events and parties.
