Bayou Boogaloo
Once again, Bayou Boogaloo returns to Mid-City with three days of food, music and fun. As usual the organizers have put together an absolutely stellar lineup of events throughout the weekend. My recommended shows are below. Remember this year the festival is only free before 3 p.m. after which it becomes ten dollars a person so get there early and support the fest all day by having a bit of food and a couple of drinks (Think about how much more food you can get when you don’t have to pay a cover). The food lineup is seriously good this year (check it out here).
On Friday get there when they open the gates for Pinettes Brass Band at 5 p.m. and then hang around for Pet Fangs and Marc Broussard. On Saturday you can catch Sasha Masakowski and Magnetic Ear’s sets early while the 101 Runners and Johnny Sketch set the stage for Leo Nocentelli’s turn as header. On Sunday check out Cha Wa and Alex McMurray early and Toubab Krewe and Honey Island Swamp Band a bit later. I think Sunday is the strongest day of music but the whole lineup is a nice concentrated burst of what’s great in town right now. Well done all around.
Hangout
There are some great performers heading to Gulf Shores this week for Hangout Fest. On Friday you can catch Pussy Riot, Caroline Rose, The Killers and Portugal the Man. On Saturday they have Son Little, The Wrecks, Noname, St. Vincent and The Chainsmokers. On Sunday the fest features Alice Merton, The Struts, SZA, Greta Van Fleet and Kendrick Lamar closes the whole thing out that night. There are still a few tickets and condos left down the coast you won’t want to miss this party. Remember to keep your eyes here for daily updates from the festival.
Parquet Courts
Tomorrow the new record from the Parquet Courts Wide Awake! comes out on Rough Trade Records. This is another excellent offering from one of the best bands on the scene right now. The record was produced by Danger Mouse and shows a tremendous growth in both their grasp of songwriting and their production technique. A couple of the videos for the record were filmed here as the band deepens their connection to the city. Check out the video for Mardi Gras beads below.
To Do This Week
In addition to all the great music at the Boogaloo and down the coast at the Hangout, you can catch The Holy Knives at Siberia tomorrow. Saturday Big Boi is at The Joy and Sexual Thunder is at Tips. Tuesday the Doobie Brothers roll into the Smoothie King Center with Steely Dan. Wednesday catch Wolfman at d.b.a.
