The New Orleans Ballet Association and the Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization held their “A Moment in Time” gala on Friday, April 20, at the JW Marriott New Orleans. The gala honored the significance of April 21, 2012. On this day, Complexions Contemporary Ballet’s Desmond Richardson and the New York City Ballet’s Wendy Whelan performed together for the first time.

Nicholas Payton, local jazz musician and Grammy award-winner, and Dwight Rhoden, choreographer and artistic director of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, provided the movement and music for the piece that made its debut in New Orleans. As a celebration of this moment in dance history, the BRAVO and NOBA gala featured a patron party, along with a seated three-course dinner by Chuck Subra Jr., executive chef of the JW Marriott.

There was also an auction featuring David Yurman jewelry from Lee Michaels, Jazz Fest Experience tickets, three-color photographs and a black-and-white photograph of Wendy Whelan and Desmond Richardson and a one-of-a-kind print donated by Mr. and Mrs. George Rodrigue. The Benchwarmers provided dancing along with music. BRAVO is the largest single contributor to the New Orleans Ballet Association. Every year, BRAVO helps make possible over 3,000 free dance classes for nine community sites in three parishes. Over the past 20 years, NOBA has provided more than $2 million of free classes to over 10,000 youth.
