Bringing Back the Long Shorts for Summer

Shorts go by many names: Bermuda, Daisy Duke, cut-offs, board. Whatever you call them, it’s time to liberate them from the dusty corners of your closet. Unlike in seasons past, I’m actually ahead of the shorts game this year. A few weeks ago, I wandered into a Free People store on Magazine Street, and there they were, what would become my new favorite shorts. So unapologetically long, it felt almost scandalous. Could I really wear these not quite capris, but far from standard length short shorts? I thought, why not? I tried them on and to my surprise, they felt fresh. Not ironically ‘90s or surfer-dude kitschy, but contemporary. An unexpectedly yummy style cocktail of Hailey Bieber meets Julia Roberts

Key to keeping this look contemporary is how you style it.  The younger set are pairing them with a crop top or tight white tee, but I’m loving a cotton blouse, linen vest or mock neck tank.  If I don’t have a belt that works, I make sure to tuck in any flowy top. Otherwise, the look reads ’90s hip hop, which is very hard to pull off. The shoes are also of utmost importance to nailing the look. Loafers refine the look while boots or thong sandals give it a more youthful edge.

In addition to my favorites from Free People, here are a few great options to try out at local stores near you. The question is, how low will you dare to go ??
