Through detailed planning, we ensure the final product is exactly what the client envisioned by controlling costs and budgets while allowing us to select the best tradesmen for the job. Unlike many builders, we approach construction through a design-focused, collaborative lens by spending significant time scrutinizing drawings alongside the design team, identifying potential issues before construction starts. This level of preparation and organization leads to a smoother, more predictable build that stays on time and budget.
How does MLM foster partnerships with industry professionals to deliver the best possible outcome for every client?
We believe in assembling the right team early — whether it’s a boutique hotel or a historic residential renovation, different projects demand different skill sets and mindsets. By thoughtfully selecting architects, designers, and trade partners from the beginning, we create alignment and clarity across the board, which ultimately drives success during construction. More and more, the industry is moving away from the outdated model of sending out completed architectural plans, collecting three competitive bids, and hiring the lowest bidder. Builders invest a tremendous amount of time and effort into producing detailed bids. Architects increasingly recognize this and are educating clients on the value of interviewing builders, selecting the best fit, and committing to a team early in the process. Having the builder involved from the beginning is the ideal scenario for a successful project.
When speaking with clients about their needs, what can they do to help you bring out the best in their project?
A strong design team makes a huge difference. Clients who know what they want — and come prepared with inspiration boards or visual references — help us hit the ground running. But perhaps the most important trait is decisiveness. Changes made during construction tend to delay the timeline and increase costs. Clear direction from the client helps everyone do their best work.
