BUKU Phase One Released and a trip to Milan

BUKU Phase One

BUKU Music and Art Project has announced phase one of its 2018 lineup and there are some big names on deck already.  You can expect performances from Bassnectar, MGMT and SZA.  This grouping demonstrates the diversity that makes BUKU so interesting.  Here we have a giant of EDM, a legendary indie rock group and a neo-soul singer all on the same bill.  I am also thrilled to see Sylvan Esso coming back to town.  Hopefully they’ll be in the float barn—that could be an epic pairing.  Keep an eye here for more announcements as they are made.  Check out Sylvan Esso’s “Die Young” below.

Milano by Daniele Luppi with Parquet Courts and Karen O

Daniele Luppi is no stranger to high concept projects.  In 2011 he teamed up with Danger Mouse to create the soundtrack to a spaghetti western that never existed.  The record—Rome—took its cues from Ennio Morricone, featured Norah Jones and Jack White and was simply brilliant.  Luppi’s strength is in capturing an era sonically.   For his new project, he has turned his attention to Milan in the 80s—a scene that Luppi experienced himself as a teen.  For this record Luppi has brought in both the New York post-punks Parquet Courts and Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O to generate the mod textures of this concept record.  The various characters that Luppi and company create spring to life though their combined efforts.  The mood is perfectly set by musical arrangements.  This is an album that sounds like an Antonioni film—hang back with it and let the story develop around you.  Check out the video for “Talisa” below (which directly references Antonioni’s Blow Up).
