Carnival Kicks Into High Gear

Carnival Parties

With the Carnival season kicking into high gear this weekend there are a number of great local events to put fill out the hours between parades.

  • Kermit Ruffins at Bullet’s Sports Bar – Thursday

This is one of Kermit’s standing gigs, but this is a great time of year to drop in on the proceedings. Everything about the proceedings are so comfortably home and perfect for breaking into the Carnival spirit.

  • John “Papa” Gros and The Crooked Vines at Tipitinas – Friday

The St. Charles route parades kick in on Friday so you’re probably going to be Uptown anyway. Catch an early drink at 45 Tchoup, watch the battle of the marching bands roll out onto Napoleon Avenue and then hang around to get funky with Papa at Tips.

  • Soul Sister Presents: HUSTLE! at Tipitinas – Saturday

Soul Sister presents an edition of her all vinyl funkathon Saturday night at Tips. Enough said.

  • Mardi Gras Kick-Off Party at Gasa Gasa – Tuesday

The local indie scene storms Gasa for a Carnival week kickoff party on Tuesday night. You can catch Paper Bison, Quintessential Octopus, Shark Attack, DiNola and Bob and the Thunder all on one bill.

tUnE-yArDs – I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life

Merrill Garbus has released an extraordinarily timely record. This new release is a chronicle of her extremely thorough investigation the unconscious assumptions she had made about the intersection of art and race. There is a fair bit of raw discomfort on display here as Garbus dismantles her previous work and builds something new. The process seems to have worked as this record is a leap past her already outstanding work. Musically, this album is perfectly captivating the textured rhythms that construct these tracks are mesmerizing. I will have more to say here soon but for now take a bit of time to give these songs a moment. Check out “Heart Attack” below.

To Do This Week

Tomorrow, after the parades, wander down to Tips for John “Papa” Gros and Crooked Vines. Also on Friday the excellent Lomelda will be at Gasa Gasa and the Futurebirds will be at One Eyed Jacks. Saturday you can catch Aaron Lee Tasjan at Jacks or Sam Lewis at Gasa Gasa. Monday BØRNS will be at the Joy with Mikky Ekko and Charlotte Cardin. Tuesday make sure to catch Gasa’s Mardi Gras Kick-off Party. Also Tuesday you can catch Marco Benevento at Blue Nile.
