Caro Mata Group Open Flagship Location of Brasa Restaurant

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Chef Edgar Caro and partner Antonio Mata of the Caro Mata Group are pleased to announce Brasa South American Steakhouse is now open in Canal Place in downtown New Orleans. Brasa is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. This is Brasa’s second location and serves as the brand’s flagship restaurant, setting the stage for the Caro Mata Group. Brasa is an homage to the asado culture of Colombia, Brazil and Argentina, showcasing the open-fire traditions from Caro’s childhood.

Chef Caro crafted a menu featuring many dishes found at the original Brasa location on Metairie Road. The focus is on unique cuts of meat procured from ranches that produce the finest quality Angus in the market and local seafood prepared with a South American approach and style.

“It has been a dream of mine to bring this style of food to downtown New Orleans,” said Caro. “We are excited to share South America’s rich culture and flavors with both locals and visitors alike and look forward to being a part of the revitalization at the foot of Canal.”

The menu starts with appetizers such as oysters a la Brasa, boquerones (marinated white anchovies), empanadas, short rib mac and cheese, and chorizo. Caviar service and a seafood platter that showcases tuna ceviche, raw oysters, shrimp remoulade, crabmeat ravigote, and lobster cocktail are also available. Chef Caro is dedicated to using locally sourced products. It results in a stellar lineup of entrée choices, including 30-day aged Creekstone Farm black Angus hanger steak, Sakura Farm Wagyu picanha with fat cap, Heritage Green Circle smoked chicken, and Linz Farm prime black Angus rib eye and Creekstone Farm prime black Angus striploin both aged in-house for 30 days. Other dishes, many of which are comprised of Angus from MG/4M Farms in Mississippi, include outside skirt steak, braised and grilled short rib, center-cut tenderloin, grilled whole fish, and a Wagyu burger. The pièce de résistance is the gaucho cut, a 30-day aged Coastal Plain Farm 36 oz. Louisiana Wagyu Tomahawk steak served for family sharing. Salads and soups include Caesar, remolacha (pickled beets), avocado asado (grilled avocado), and Ajíaco de Nana (Mom’s Colombian chicken and potato soup). Chef Caro’s a la carte items showcase some childhood favorites, including several South American preparations of potatoes, grilled carrots, smoked corn, roasted cauliflower, garlic mushrooms, and steamed asparagus.

Brasa offers an extensive beverage program with curated cocktails and a wine list expertly paired with the menu by an in-house bar specialist. Guests can expect a large selection of South American wines, as well as wines from around the world.

The space, once occupied by Morton’s Steak House, was completely remodeled to recreate the romantic feeling of a South American locale. As guests enter the second-floor restaurant, they are greeted with lush, raised tropical gardens of foliage and plants designed by Luna Botanicals. A large, glassed Himalayan salt room sits near the entrance, showcasing the dry-aged meats featured on the menu. Rattan and wicker furnishings add to the South American feel, and large glass windows offer an unobstructed view of the city. Hernan Caro, a local sculptor and Chef Caro’s uncle, crafted unique pieces for the space, and artist Tina Hall’s abstract, large-scale paintings adorn the walls. The interior designer for the project was Cicada. An outdoor patio space is slated to open later and will offer seating for cocktails and appetizers.

Private dining space can accommodate groups of 10 to 100 guests. A special event coordinator is on-site to assist in coordinating elevated gatherings, business lunches, board meetings, seated dinners, and cocktail receptions. The private space can be converted into three separate rooms or opened into one large space. Full buyouts can incorporate passed items, chef stations, and displays.
