Thursday, March 6, the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans held Campaign Celebration 2008, a reception honoring of the success of the group’s fundraising throughout the year. Former New York City mayor Ed Koch addressed members of the Premier Ben Gurion Society and others at a reception in the Crescent Ballroom at the Westin Hotel at Canal Place.
Koch spoke to guests about his observation of an increasingly positive air in New Orleans, as well as the importance of the survival the state of Israel.
The former mayor also previously served as a congressman, city councilman and army infantryman. Currently a partner in Bryan Cave LLP, Koch is perhaps best known for the economic improvements accomplished during his tenure as mayor.
Koch was not the only guest of honor, however; Sara Stone, a leader in the local Jewish community for over 50 years, was presented at the reception with the third annual Roger Bissinger Memorial Award – an honor recognizing outstanding spirit, character and leadership. Stone has worked tirelessly with organizations including the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Welfare Fund, Jewish Children’s Regional Service and the National Council of Jewish Women.
Alan Franco and Lynne Wasserman served as event co-chairs. William and Susan Hess served as honorary event co-chairs. a
